Bio

Originally from New York, I’ve been making sound more beautiful since 1993. I’m now working from both sides of the Atlantic, currently based out of NYC and Helsinki, Finland.

From the very beginning of my career, even as an intern, I’d sit in the back of the room, observing, trying to grab and hold onto whatever bits of knowledge I could, looking to decipher the art and science of audio engineering. Even then, just as it does now, audio engineering always felt to me to be exactly that, art and science, the perfect balance between left and right brain, a scientist working as an artist, or an artist working as a scientist. Inspiration filtered through science.

Every project I work on, I approach as if it’s my own. I want every record, every film, every commercial, every piece of audio I’m involved with to sound the best it can. With that said, I’m also constantly thinking about efficiency and effectiveness, looking for the specific solutions that will help me accomplish the specific goals of my clients and their projects. I pride myself on delivering projects on time and on budget, minimizing the need for revisions whenever possible.

I’m endlessly curious, always keeping up with the latest methodologies and technologies. So you can feel confident our final outputs will be compatible with leading-edge formats, and in-step with current media trends.

As I approach 30 years in the industry, I’ve never stopped getting excited about my next project, either big or small, I still look forward to learning something new with every job.

Whether you’re in NYC, Helsinki or another part of the world, I’d love to hear from you. We can work together in my studio, remotely, or I can travel to you and your project. Drop me a line and tell me about your record, film, commercial, webisode, podcast, or any of your upcoming audio projects – I’m always looking forward to what’s next!

Résumé

A quick, and I’m sure far from exhaustive list: my work has shown at Sundance, Slamdance and Tribeca. It’s appeared on ABC, NBC, MSNBC, HBO, MTV, ESPN, PBS, CNN, Discovery, Nickelodeon, The WB, Bravo, A&E, BET, IFC, NHK, Oxygen, WE TV, The Playboy Channel, Spike, and Biography. I’ve worked on feature films, TV shows, commercials, documentaries, industrials, webisodes, radio spots, audio for theater, ballet, video games and multimedia. I’ve worked with bands and artists for Sony Records, Arista, Hollywood, Tommy Boy, Jive, Elektra, Def Squad, plus many independent artists.

I love mixing, tracking and producing bands, solo artists, orchestras, choirs and more. I’ve worked in the context of rock, metal, pop, rap, classical, theater, TV jingles, TV scores and underscores, klezmer, and even music for kalimba.

I’ve also enjoyed and continue to enjoy working in audio post as a sound mixer, sound designer and foley artist; along with recording, editing and producing voiceover and ADR sessions. I love all the unique challenges of each of these, working for the big screen, the little screen, the video game screen, and every screen in between, as well as for radio and podcasts.

I’ve also composed music in a range of styles for a broad list of clients. Being a musician was my original love, and what led me to engineering. I love that I get to do both.

Additionally, I work as a music supervisor. I love this roll, and the opportunity to look at a project from this very different vantage point.

I’ve built, rebuilt, and upgraded many, many studios. Actually, years before I was an audio engineer, as a kid and into my teens, I worked with my uncles who were contractors in San Francisco. The very first studio I ever worked at I helped build, Matlin Recording, on the corner of 8th Avenue and 14th Street, in 1993.

Take a look at my PORTFOLIO and DISCOGRAPHY for a more exhaustive list of my credits.
